Jesus, The Great Physician (Mark 1:21-34)

And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

- Mark 1:21-34

-Population of 1000-1500
-Jesus Enters the Synagogue on the Sabbath
-Jesus begins to teach and the people are amazed at his teaching. They are blown away because Jesus has an authority that they had never seen, unlike the pharisees.
-Immediately // (4 times in the text) // a demon manifests in the temple and is rebuked by Jesus. What an unbelievable sight to see!

The Demonic is Real!

[Mental Illness & Disability vs. Demonic Possession]

And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

- Mark 1:34
-When the presence of God comes around the demonic, manifestations and conflict often happens.
-We need to acknowledge and prepare ourselves to encounter the demonic
-Can’t stick our head in the sand and pretend like it does not exist
-You will always lose a fight against something you don’t believe exists.

The reaction of the people was astonishment toward the authority not the removal of the demon.

And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.

- Mark 1:23

There is an theme of notoriety we will see as we progress in this book. Jesus wanted to remain low key. Jesus fame immediately spreads through all of Galilee.

1. Jesus Has Authority Over All Creation

And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

- Mark 1:34

-Jesus had authority over the demon and the sickness
-Jesus healed many of both demonic spirits and sicknesses(Makes Him the Great Physician)
-Remember that this is written primarily to non-Jewish people. So for a man to have this authority over spirits and sicknesses is a huge testimony to this person named Jesus

It should be a comfort to us to know that our Lord has authority over everything. When we come against trial and tribulation and all sorts of situations, nothing is outside the realm of the authority of Christ

And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
