The Unclean & Untouchable (Mark 1:35-45)

And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”  And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.

1. Prayer

How much are you really praying?

– “I pray every day but I could always pray more” Translation, I spend less than 5 minutes in prayer
-It’s apparent to me the amount of time a person spends in prayer by how they handle difficulty, trials and offense
-We will not be effective in prayer as long as we believe and act as though we can spend more time on Facebook, watching TV or whatever your lazy hobby is than we spend praying and still be effective in prayer
What are we praying for?

-Do we spend more time praying for our troubles, situations, trials and pains than we do anything else?
-Do you set aside time for prayer?
-Jesus purposed a time before the sun came to pray
-Jesus got up very early. This means he spent a good amount of time in prayer
Jesus removed himself from the normal setting of life
-We can’t expect to be powerful in prayer or in our Christian life if a majority of our prayer is in the car on the way to work or before meals.

- Mark 1:36-39
And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

- Mark 1:35

2. Popularity

-Jesus was more concerned about the message and reaching all the people that he totally abandoned a crowd that wanted to hear Him speak again.
-This is completely backwards to today’s world!
-Christian Pastors, Speakers, Leaders are often very self promoting.
-Getting the message to everyone was a priority for Jesus
-Jesus had a Job to do and that was to preach the Gospel.

3. Pity (Compassion)

-Leper background
Outcast/Society
Awful disease
Infected had to shout “Unclean! Unclean!”
For this man to approach Jesus was very frowned upon.

I. Jesus was moved by compassion.

-Not the faith of the man but the compassion.
-When was the last time we were moved with compassion?
-Last time you saw someone begging for money on the street and just went and talked to them, maybe bought them some food and gave them some money.
-Compassion makes you feel others pain. ARE WE TO BUSY WITH OUR OWN PAIN TO FEEL OTHERS
-When we walk in the likeness of God, being moved by compassion should be normal for a Christian. Jesus was often moved by compassion.
-Compassion moves us (have you been moved?)
-It should be comforting to us to know that our Lord and King has compassion
-He knows and feels for what we are going through. He looked at this man who was wretched and sick and saw this man’s pain and anguish and had compassion on him.

II. Jesus (Clean) made the man (Unclean) clean

-In the OT if someone touched a leper, that person became unclean
-The the NT Jesus comes and touches the unclean and makes it clean
(As the high priest and messiah, couldn’t touch what was unclean)
-This happens not only in our body but mainly in our Soul/Spirit
-Jesus touches the lepercy and it FLEES

III. Immediately it was healed

-This was not a gradual healing. This was instant!
-Oh I can feel the headache starting to go away. INSTANT

IV. Jesus warns him not to tell anyone

V. Jesus commands the man to go make an offering

Leviticus 14

VI. The man disobeys Jesus
